Umalas
A residential pocket of villas and leftover rice fields in Kerobokan, inland from Seminyak and on the way to Canggu.
About Umalas
Umalas is a residential area of villas and rice fields in Kerobokan, inland from Seminyak and on the road towards Canggu. It suits families and longer stays in private villas. You'll ride to the restaurants.
On paper Umalas isn't a village at all. It's two banjar, Umalas Kauh and Umalas Kangin, inside the kelurahan of Kerobokan Kelod in North Kuta, the same administrative area as Petitenget and Batu Belig beaches.
It has a large expat population, particularly French. The Lycée Français de Bali is here too.
Where it is
The airport is 12 to 15 km away. Allow 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on how the Kerobokan junction is moving. Seminyak is roughly ten minutes away and Canggu about fifteen, outside rush hour.
For padel, Amare Padel Umalas has four roofed courts on Jalan Dukuh Indah.
Highlights of Umalas
- Rice fields between the villas. Green paddies still surround a lot of the villa lanes.
- Batu Belig and Petitenget beaches. The nearest beaches are in the same kelurahan. Batu Belig is the quieter of the two for sunset.
- Amare Padel Umalas. Amare has four roofed doubles courts on Jalan Dukuh Indah.
Travel tips for Umalas
- Get a scooter or use the apps. There's virtually no public transport. Gojek and Grab cover the area.
- Avoid 4pm to 8pm. That's when the Kerobokan four-way junction can add 20 to 30 minutes to any trip south towards Seminyak or the airport, and the back roads locals used to use as shortcuts, like Jalan Batu Belig, are now jammed too.
- Hospitals are in Kuta. Umalas has small clinics. For anything serious, Siloam and Kasih Ibu are in Kuta.
