About Sumberkima

Sumberkima is a village on Bali's northwest coast, in the Gerokgak district of Buleleng, a few kilometres west of Pemuteran. It suits divers and snorkellers heading for Menjangan Island, the protected reef island offshore. No village sits closer to it.

This is a long way from the south. Pemuteran, next door, is about four hours from the airport by road, over the central mountains via Bedugul and Munduk or on the more direct Pupuan road.

The bay is calm. Barrier reefs along the coast keep the water flat enough that a government oyster-breeding programme chose Sumberkima for a South Sea pearl oyster nursery, in floating cages beside the fish farms already working the bay.

Sumberkima Hill, a villa retreat on the slope above the bay, runs a shuttle down to Mangroove Bay, its restaurant and boutique hostel on the water. Together they built Mangroove Bay Padel, two roofed courts among the palms.

Why we love it

Highlights of Sumberkima

  • Menjangan Island. Boats from Labuhan Lalang reach the island in about 30 minutes. Its reef is one of the best-preserved in the area, protected inside West Bali National Park with mooring buoys to stop anchor damage.
  • Pemuteran. The neighbouring village has most of the dive shops, the Biorock reef restoration and Pura Pulaki temple.
  • West Bali National Park. About 190 km² of savanna, mangrove and forest, created in 1941 and the last stronghold of the Bali starling.

Travel tips for Sumberkima

  • Arrange a driver. Ride-hailing apps don't operate around Pemuteran, so book a private transfer from the south.
  • Don't day-trip it. At around four hours each way before stops, Sumberkima only makes sense for a few nights.
  • Dive with a Pemuteran operator. Most include the drive to the Labuhan Lalang dock, and a standard day is two dives plus lunch, back around 4pm.
  • No surf. The water in this part of the north coast is calm and flat year-round.
