Kutuh
Bukit village between Ungasan and Nusa Dua, home to Pandawa Beach and the Timbis paragliding cliffs.
About Kutuh
Kutuh is the village behind Pandawa Beach, and the reason to know the name is that beach. It sits on the limestone peninsula in South Kuta, Badung, between Ungasan to the west and Nusa Dua to the east. Pandawa is about 18 km from the airport, and the regency's own guide calls it an hour's drive.
Kutuh is small. Under 9 square kilometres, around 4,000 people. It's also rich. In 2018 it was named the highest-earning village in Indonesia, with IDR 50 billion in income.
The road down to Pandawa was cut through an old stone quarry, so the last stretch runs between quarried limestone walls. Seaweed farmers work the calm shallows in front of the beach, the same stretch of water that film crews use as a backdrop for Indonesian TV dramas. Paragliders launch from Bukit Timbis nearby and from Bukit Payung, out over the coast.
For padel, Aayan Padel Sanctuary is in the village, with three indoor courts and one outdoor.
Highlights of Kutuh
- Pandawa Beach. About a kilometre of sand behind the cliffs, once known as the secret beach. Calm, shallow water, with parking, toilets, food stalls and a medical post.
- The Pandawa statues. Six figures carved into the cliff along the access road, from top to bottom Kunti and then Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva, the Pandawa brothers of the Mahabharata who gave the beach its name.
- Paragliding at Timbis and Bukit Payung. Flights launch from the hills above the white-sand coast.
- Aayan Padel Sanctuary. Three indoor doubles courts and one outdoor, east of Pecatu.
Travel tips for Kutuh
- Allow an hour from the airport. It's only around 18 km to Pandawa, but Badung's tourism office puts the drive at about an hour.
- Don't come to Pandawa to surf. The water is calm and shallow, and it's used for seaweed farming. For waves, head west to Uluwatu.
- Pandawa has the facilities. Big car park, toilets, food stalls, massage. You don't need to bring much.
