Kedungu
Surf beach and rice-field village in Tabanan, a couple of kilometres from Tanah Lot and past the Canggu villa belt.
About Kedungu
Kedungu is for surfers and anyone who wants Canggu's coastline without Canggu around it. The beach is in Belalang, a small village in Kediri district, Tabanan, about 2.5 km from Tanah Lot as the crow flies. It sits further out than Pererenan, Seseh and Cemagi, past the end of the villa belt that runs west from Canggu.
Behind the beach it's cliffs and paddies. Tabanan is known as Bali's rice barn, with more than a quarter of the regency under rice, and the regency caps how much land can be built on. On the sand, warungs put out bean bags for the sunset crowd.
The surf is the draw. Indonesian and foreign surfers both use it as an alternative to Bali's better-known breaks.
You'll be driving for most things beyond the beach. The airport is only about 18 km away in a straight line, but by road you're crawling back through Kerobokan, Seminyak or Kuta traffic, which holds things up at most times of day. Jungle has a branch out here, Jungle Padel Kedungu, with coaching and a restaurant.
Highlights of Kedungu
- Kedungu Beach. Cliffs and rice fields right behind the sand, and a break that surfers from Bali and abroad use as an alternative to the famous spots.
- Sunset on the bean bags. Beach warungs set out bean bags with food and drinks in the late afternoon.
- Tanah Lot. The sea temple on its rock is a short drive away. You can only walk out to it at low tide.
- Jungle Padel Kedungu. Courts set in greenery, a pro shop and a restaurant. Open 7am to midnight.
Travel tips for Kedungu
- Allow over an hour from the airport. Even Tanah Lot is about 45 minutes from Seminyak, and up to an hour back in traffic. Kedungu is a couple of kilometres beyond it.
- Book padel in the Jungle app. Jungle Padel runs bookings for all its clubs through one app, so make sure you've picked Kedungu and not one of the other branches.
- Visit Tanah Lot at low tide. That's the only time the walk out to the rock is possible.

The break is what put Kedungu on the map. Tabanan now lists the beach among the regency's featured destinations, alongside much bigger names like Tanah Lot and the Jatiluwih rice terraces up in the hills.
