The smallest and wildest of the Nusa islands, featuring dramatic cliff coastlines, hidden beaches, and incredible ocean views with minimal development.
Nusa Ceningan is the smallest of the three Nusa islands, sitting between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida about 30 minutes by fast boat from Sanur. This tiny island is only about 2 kilometers long and feels way more remote than its famous neighbors. Connected to Nusa Lembongan by a narrow yellow suspension bridge, Ceningan has dramatic cliff coastlines, hidden beaches, and some of the most incredible ocean views in Bali.
The island sits right at sea level with temperatures around 28-30°C (82-86°F), but the constant ocean breeze keeps things comfortable. What makes Ceningan special is how wild and undeveloped it feels - there are no big resorts or crowded beaches, just a handful of cliff-top warungs and guesthouses. The coastline is mostly rugged limestone cliffs with small pockets of white sand beaches tucked into hidden coves.
Most visitors come for day trips from Lembongan, but staying overnight gives you the chance to experience the island without any crowds. The local community is still heavily involved in seaweed farming, so you'll see colorful patches of seaweed drying on platforms along the coast. It's nothing like the developed Nusa islands tourism scene - more like discovering a secret tropical hideaway.
Cliff jumping at Blue Lagoon is the main thrill here - you can jump from platforms at different heights (3-13 meters) into crystal clear blue water for 50,000 IDR ($3.50) including life jacket. The Secret Point Beach requires a 20-minute hike down steep paths but rewards you with a pristine white sand beach that's often completely empty.
Devil's Tear viewpoint offers incredible shots of waves crashing against limestone cliffs, especially during high tide when the spray shoots up dramatically. The Mahana Point cliff-top restaurant serves amazing seafood with panoramic ocean views - definitely the best sunset spot on the island. Traditional seaweed farming areas create colorful patterns along the coastline that make for unique photos you won't find anywhere else in Indonesia.
Take the yellow bridge from Nusa Lembongan - it's free and gives you great photos of both islands
Rent a scooter on Lembongan for 70,000 IDR ($5) per day and bring it across the bridge
Wear proper shoes for cliff walking since the limestone can be sharp and slippery
Bring cash for cliff jumping fees and food since there are no ATMs on the island
Pack snacks and water since restaurant options are very limited outside of a few cliff-top spots
Check tide times for cliff jumping and beach access since some spots are tide-dependent

April through September offers the calmest seas and best conditions for cliff jumping and swimming. The dry season means clearer skies for those incredible cliff-top photos and safer hiking down to hidden beaches. High tide (check local tide charts) gives you the most dramatic wave action at Devil's Tear viewpoint.
Early morning (7-9 AM) is perfect for having Secret Point Beach to yourself before any day-trippers arrive. Late afternoon (4-6 PM) offers the best light for cliff photos and sunset views from Mahana Point. Weekdays are way quieter than weekends when domestic tourists flood the area.
Rainy season (October-March) can make the cliff paths slippery and dangerous, plus rough seas might cancel boat trips from Bali. However, you'll have the island almost completely to yourself during this period. If you're serious about cliff jumping or beach exploration, plan to stay overnight since day trips from Lembongan feel rushed and you miss the peaceful evening atmosphere.
