Three car-free tropical islands off Lombok's coast featuring white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and each island offering its own unique personality.
The Gili Islands sit just off Lombok's northwest coast, about 2 hours by fast boat from Bali's Padang Bai or Sanur ports. These three tiny islands - Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air - are car-free tropical paradises with white sand beaches, crystal clear water, and a totally different vibe from Bali. Each island has its own personality, but all share that laid-back island life where bicycles and horse-drawn carts (cidomo) are the only transport.
Temperatures stay around 28-30°C (82-86°F) year-round with ocean breezes keeping things comfortable. The water is incredible for swimming and snorkeling since you're surrounded by coral reefs and the visibility is often 20-30 meters. What makes the Gilis special is how small they are - you can walk around any island in 1-3 hours depending on which one you choose.
Gili Trawangan (Gili T) is the party island with beach bars and nightlife. Gili Meno is the quiet honeymoon spot with hardly any development. Gili Air sits in the middle - more relaxed than Trawangan but with better restaurants than Meno. All three have that classic tropical island feeling with swaying palms, hammocks on the beach, and some of Indonesia's best snorkeling right off shore.
The snorkeling here is absolutely incredible - you can swim with sea turtles at multiple spots around all three islands, especially the turtle sanctuary areas off Gili Meno. The coral reefs are healthy and colorful with tons of tropical fish just meters from the beach. Sunset Point on Gili Trawangan offers amazing views of Mount Agung in Bali across the water.
The famous Gili swings over crystal clear water make for perfect Instagram shots and cost around 50,000 IDR ($3.50) per session. Island hopping between all three Gilis is easy with local boats running regularly for 85,000-100,000 IDR ($6-7) per trip. The night market on Gili Trawangan serves fresh seafood and local dishes at great prices. Diving here is world-class with sites like Shark Point where you can see reef sharks, and the underwater statues off Gili Meno.
Book fast boat tickets in advance during peak season - prices range from 500,000-650,000 IDR ($35-45) return from Bali
Bring cash since ATMs are limited and often broken, especially on Gili Meno
Pack reef shoes for walking on coral beaches and protection from sea urchins
Download offline maps since WiFi can be spotty and cell service varies between islands
Rent bicycles for 50,000 IDR ($3.50) per day since there are no cars or motorbikes
Bring seasickness medication for boat rides since crossings can be rough during windy weather
Snorkel with sea turtles at the turtle sanctuary areas around all three islands - equipment rental costs 75,000 IDR ($5) per day. Try the famous swings over crystal clear water for those perfect tropical photos. Go island hopping between all three Gilis to experience their different personalities and vibes. Take scuba diving courses or dive trips to see reef sharks, rays, and incredible coral formations. Rent bicycles to explore each island's quiet inland paths and traditional villages. Watch incredible sunsets from beach bars while sipping fresh coconuts or local Bintang beers. Visit the night markets for fresh grilled fish and traditional Indonesian dishes. Join boat trips for dolphin watching in the waters between the islands and Lombok.
April through October offers the calmest seas for boat crossings and the best underwater visibility for snorkeling and diving. This dry season means less chance of rough weather canceling boat trips between islands or back to Bali. The water stays warm year-round at 26-28°C (79-82°F), perfect for swimming.
Early morning and late afternoon give you the best light for photos and fewer crowds at popular snorkeling spots. Weekdays are definitely quieter than weekends when domestic tourists flood Gili Trawangan. If you're planning to visit multiple islands, allow 3-4 days minimum since boat schedules depend on weather and you don't want to feel rushed.
Rainy season (November-March) brings afternoon storms that can make boat crossings uncomfortable and reduce underwater visibility. However, accommodation prices drop significantly and you'll have beaches more to yourself. The turtles are active year-round, so you can swim with them regardless of season, but calmer waters make the experience more enjoyable.
